Allergies affect an estimated 20 million Americans each year. Although people may not be able to pinpoint the cause of an allergy, a number of factors can result in reactions such as sneezing, coughing, and itching. Although there are many types of allergies, there are also different types. For example, dog allergy is common for people who have dogs but not everyone has to worry about that.

Allergic reactions are often quite serious and even life-threatening. It is recommended that anyone with allergies consult their doctor about their allergies in order to receive proper treatment. If you are uncertain about whether you have allergies, do not be afraid to ask your doctor what the symptoms are.

Not all allergic reactions happen in the air. For example, if a person had a reaction to a tree before, they might also have a reaction to bird poop, to mold, or to pollen. Allergies can also be to the eyes, nose, mouth, or throat. Depending on the type of allergy a person has, treatment may be done in several ways.

Many allergies can be treated with allergy shots. There are three types of shots that are given. The first type is the injectable. This type of allergy shot is given with a needle at the base of the spine where it enters the muscle. The other two types of allergy shots are placed under the skin and you can take them on an as-needed basis.

Allergy shots can be used by a patient without a prescription. Before you take the shot, your doctor will ask you to come in and tell him or her about your allergies. He or she will then give you the allergy shot under your skin so that there are no red marks or swelling from the shot when you go to bed.

Your doctor will give you a liquid or nasal spray before the shot to help get you ready for the treatment. Allergy shots can usually be administered at home. Since this is done by injection, there is a small chance that you could die from the shot.

Make sure that you tell your doctor if you are allergic to fish, corn, fish, wheat, milk, or eggs. If you are going to take the allergy shot, make sure that you follow all the instructions provided by your doctor.

There are also different types of shots that are given over again. You may need to get an immune globulin shot every few months to help protect your body from further allergic reactions. When taking this type of shot, you will have to avoid some foods and food products.

These types of shots are used when you have more serious allergies. Some of the most common food allergies that are treated with immunoglobulin shots are peanut, egg, and shellfish allergies. Anytime that you see that your food allergy symptoms are still present, you should see your doctor for the immunoglobulin shot.

Even though you may not be able to pinpoint what caused your serious allergic reactions, your doctor should be able to tell you if you need to get this type of shot. The best time to get this type of shot is between six and twelve months after you experience your first serious allergic reaction. If you wait too long, your allergy may become serious.

When allergies are left untreated, they can lead to other illnesses that have more serious side effects. Allergies can make you run a fever, develop an infection, or even cause a miscarriage. If you have been experiencing symptoms since you were a child, the sooner you get treated, the better it will be for you.
